- Lough Sheelan is situated in the north of Westmeath bordering the counties of Cavan and Meath. It is eight miles long and four miles in breadth. It is a dividing line between Ulster and Leinster.
There are three large islands on this lake besides several small ones, the largest is called "Inis Uachtair". (Church Island)
On this island the remains of the old church are still to be seen from which it derives its name.
Tradition tells us that the space now occupied by Lough Sheelan was once a rich and smiling vale in which was situated Churches, palaces, castles, etc.
At the upper end of the vale was supposed to be a spring covered with a huge flag stone.
A small opening admitted, sufficient water to supply the town. On the flagstone was engraved the following,
"Content and happiness are one
Try to part them both are gone
Thankful for the good you know
