  1. "There are many forts in this district and the names of them are Whyte's, Kenny's, Duffy's, Barden's and MacCormacks. They are in view of one another, so that the people could signal from one to another in olden times.
    They are of a round shape with a big fence around them. There is a fort in Cranley and a man was digging in it, when he found a hole in the middle of it. He threw a stone down into the hole and he heard it falling down into the earth. There is a fort in Kilsallagh and it is said that Hugh O'Neill rested his troops in it.
