Saint Patrick Saint Brigid and Saint Mel are traditionally connected with this district Saint Patrick erected a monastery or abbey and also a cathedral at Ardagh and within the convent grounds are still to be seen the remains of a stone Cathedral dedicated to Saint Mel When Saint Patrick came to Ardagh he took with him his nephew Saint Mel also his own household which numbered twenty one persons He built a church of timber poles wattles and earthy mud He had with him three carpenters three masons and three smith The church was beehive shaped While residing at Ardagh
