  1. Forts
    One of the earliest forts erected here was constructed by the Firbolgs those great architects + builders who left us Dun Aengus etc.
    This old Fort somewhere near the ford figured prominently in the many wars waged between the king's of Connacht + the king's of Tara.
    AD. 10008 Brian Boru fortified Athlone and used this fort to overawe Connacht and Meath.
    AD 1129. First Castle.
    The Four Masters say that a Castle was erected S Laird Bheal Black O Connor in the summer of 1129 when seeking to establish himself asking of All Ireland. It stood on the site of the present Castle.
