    over the Castle and put up the white flag. When the old Colonel heard this insulting message he took out his pistol and fired a shot over the messenger's head. "That is my answer," he said, meaning he meant to defend the town to the last. During the siege the brave Colonel was killed and he is buried in the old grave-yard of St. Mary's.
    Fitzgerald is another local hero, renowned too for his bravery during the siege. Withe his own small Battalion he held the English army at bay til the whole Irish army was ready to defend the town.
