  2. This district was at one time noted for its matchmaking. There was great competition among the men for the hand of a girl with a fortune. The farmers and tradesmen of the district vied with each other to be the accepted one, particularly in the case of a "snug" farmer who was reputed to be able to give his daughter a good dowry.
