This river is commonly known as the Fanowen. There is a bridge over this river and there was supposed to be a giant living at the bridge.
- There was a man living in Clonave, Coole, Co. Westmeath, about twenty years ago. He was about 10 feet in height, and he was never called anything but the wild man of Clonave.
- Long ago there lived two Giants in this district, and they used to steal hens and go around selling them for cakes of bread.
