The old people often heard of houses having no chimneys, and of houses having the fire on the centre of the floor, and the smoke used to go out on an old window that had no glass.
The floors were made of clay.
Half doors were common, but they are not so common now.
Turf and wood were used for fire.
Rushlights were employed for giving light at night. Candles were made locally of rushes. - Graveyards
