Told by Patrick Nulty 50 years
    Ballymacad Oldcastle, Co. Meath
In olden times tea was used round here at Christmas and never used until Christmas again. The old people could not afford to buy it. When their friends came they had refreshments of milk and griddle cake. They used porriage in the morning and the evening. They lived mostly on vegetables. They were strong and lived for a good Old age

  2. Food in Olden Times
In olden times people depended solely on their corn and potatoes and some wheat.
Of the corn they made oaten bread and porridge
The poor who had not a milk supply made a mixture of oatmeal, seeds and water. They left this in a bowl or pail until it got sour. This they called "Flumery". They used this instead of milk on fast days with some potatoes and herrings.
