being built now are roofed with slates or tiles. Slate roofs last longer than thatched ones. Every year one will have to repair a thatched one. A thatched house is very warm but very dangerous if a fire broke out. Some men are neater thatchers than others. This is the way thatching is done. The straw for thatching is first got ready. Then a long ladder is stretched up the roof. First all the old thatch is cleared down otherwise it would damage the new thatch. The implement used is called a thatching fork. Some thatchers sew the thatch on with a wire or rope.
