  1. Thou standest all alone,
    Black monument of stone,
    The tides that come and go
    With ceaseless ebb and flow,
    Whether around thy base
    Creeping with fond embrace,
    Rising and falling slow
    With murmur soft flow:
    Or dashing wildly round
    With war and booming sound,
    And mighty-swelling surge,
    When tempests fiercely urge.
    The sea birds mournful cry
    Make plaintive lullaby
    Whose pinions gently sway
    As slow they wing their way,
    These and the winds that flee
    Over the restless sea
    Thy sole companions be.

    Steadfast and true thou art
    Noble you do your part
    Firm clasped with iron (?)
