  1. The name of the school was Hedge School. It was so called because it was beside the hedges the school was carried on in the Summer time. The school was situated in Crossford, about two miles from Tubber Co. Galway. In a thatched house the school was carried on.
    Maurice Keane was the teacher's name. He lived in the district. In his own house he used to teach. The teacher used stay in the house where the school was carried on. Sometimes the teacher used go to each scholar to teach him. Each scholar used give the teacher a couple of pence every week for his pay.
    The subjects they used teach were Common Spellings, Figures and Mental Arithmetic. The teacher had Irish, but he never taught it. It was through English he used teach.
    The scholars used sit on stools instead of desks. The teacher used sit on a sugán chair beside the fire.
