    the river and threw them in to it; this man was one of the first to die with the hunger. During the famine there was a common pit for burying people there, near Clare Castle and it is called Clare Hill. During the famine the Old Military Barracks Ennis was a hospital. Half of the people of Ireland went to America for to work and support their families. The Protestants built soup kitchens to try and make the Catholics become Protestants. They never succeeded.
