   present in Drom is the exact same as this Catholic Church of Thurles referred to. The same is also true of Ballina Chapel. The Convents are mentioned and their schools - like schools being partly supported by a bequest of £2000 from the late Dr. James Butler, Archbishop. The Christian Brothers Schools are also mentioned as being supported by a similar bequest from Archbishop Bray. There were in additional 13 private schools. In 1831 a great corn trade was done in Thurles, the corn being sent by road to Clonmel for shipment. The Episcopal Palace was erected by Archbishop Butler and stands adjoining the Cathedral in which he is interred.

2. The Grant of Fairs to Thurles

   This was given in 1626 by King Charles I to George Mathew and Lady Thurles. it was to be for a two days fair yearly, beginning on Easter Tuesday, and for a two days fair yearly beginning on the feast of St Lawrence in August. The grant also included a permit to hold markets each week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The above mentioned fair had the
