in the mirror trying to see the faces of their future husband. A very old custom was for a young girl to wade through a stream three times up to her waist and that night the name of her future husband will be told to her in her sleep.
The roasting of beans the peeling of the apple the melting of the lead and the looking in the mirror for future husband are still carried on in this district. Only a great simpleton of a girl would now wade through a stream hoping for a husband. Insted of stampy bread, they now have barm bracks with a ring silver cippin and piece of rag. There is great fun at the cutting of the cake to see who gets what is in it. The ring is for speedy marriage, the rag is for a future nun or priest, the cippin for death, and the silver for wealth. There is a dance always on November night I this parish. It is held in Elm Park. The girls drive there in motors dressed in lovely frocks and dance shoes. The price to get in is 10/= or 5/=. A band supplies the music and they dance all English dances. The old people shake their heads and say where will it all end.
