  1. In the townland of Spittle, in the parish of Darragh, there is an unused slate quarry about 60 feet deep. It is surrounded by great mounds of earth, and gravel, much of which has been removed in recent years for gravelling passages. Through this gravel, there is a large share of bits of slate.
Work was started in this quarry during the famine years. When the men had gone to the present foundation, the springs of water sprang up and as they had no pumps, work had to be abandoned.
