    A few days before Christmas 1865, the Ibis, a steamship was lost at Ballycroneen Bay, a little to eastward of Poerhead. She left London with a valuable cargo, fifteen passengers and a crew of twenty-five men. A terrible gale blew on the following day, her engines broke down off Ballycrooneen. Captain Holland, unable to sail out of the bay came to anchor and rode out the gale safely that night. The following morning the steamer Sobrino under Captain Stavety was sent to her rescue and after great trouble two tug boats got her in tow. The tow ropes broke and the Ibis was driven
