At one time smuggling was carried on around the sea coast...

around the sea coast. Ships from France and Spain used to bring cargoes of wine and tobacco and brandy without paying and revenue. This was going on for quite a long time until one of the party who was implicated in the business was not satisfied with the profit he was making out of the transaction and wanted to grasp all the money himself. He betrayed his comrades and sold the secret of the hiding place to the excise officer so they sent one of their staff and a lot of men under his charge to seize on the goods and dig them up. Now it so happened that on the day in question there was a young man working in the field where the goods were hidden and the officer approached and wanted information from him about the goods and the young man denied all knowledge of them so the officer pressed him very hard to show him the hiding place and told him that he himself knew the exact spot but he didnot want to give the money to the informer as he hated him for betraying his comrades. It happened in the place where our house is situated.
