    Long ago the houses on the Great Island were of timber construction.

    Long ago the houses on the Great Island were of timber construction, and were built in small groups and surrounded by circular mounds. Several of these mounds are visible on the Island to-day, in the Ballymore district; one being near the village, one at Ballybrassil, and one in Ballydanielmore .
    The inhabitants of these houses rode on horseback without saddle, stirrup or spurs. They guided their horses with a stick bent at one end.
    Hunting rabbits was a common sport with them.
