did this journey frequently. They went from house to house gathering firkins and when they had a load they set out for Cork. They were paid so much a firkin
The farmer went to Cork every year at the end of the butter-season to settle accounts with the butter-merchant. This was considered a great event. There was as much excitement over it almost as there would over a wedding. The whole household were astir betimes in the morning to see "himself" starting out for the unknown. Then the anxiety with which his return was awaited would be incredible in our day. His neighbours came to the house to welcome him, and to hear the news he had brought, and the adventures he had met with. The journey was done at first by road, usually on horseback but later by train.
On returning home he had little presents for the children. He also brought a tin (3 lbs) of Newsom's tea and some sugar. The wonders he has seen in Cork were the subject of conversation for many weeks.
