- In older times, shops were very rare in this district. Small things like groceries &c were sold in the local villages.
I lived in Knocknenaugh, near the village of Kiskeam. Meal and flour were brought from Newmarket - 8 miles away, or more generally from Kanturk about 13 miles distant.
Shop Boots and clothes were not to be had nearer than Kanturk, while shoe-maker's boots were got in Millstreet about 15 miles away.
Cross-road shops were unknown in those days, so that bringing supplies of meal and flour and was a big job, and one which occupied a whole day. Buying and selling were carried on after Mass. Sweet-cakes, apples, sweets and "sea- grass" in summer were sold in "standings" (tents) outside the chapel gate. This custom is not altogether dead. When apples are ripe they are still sold by hawkers outside the gate: otherwise the custom is dead.
Sunday closing was not in force at one time and public houses were kept fairly busy on Sundays and holidays. A party of 3 or 4 or more adjourned to the "pub". If it were a small party they called for half-gallons of porter in turn. If the party was a large one they ordered a gallon, each person(continues on next page)
