Some time after a messenger arrived from Cromwell with a letter. Mac Auliffe suspecting treachery opened the letter, and this is what he read ;- "The bearer of this letter is to be hanged immediately".
Mac Auliffe gave the letter to the messenger and told him to go to Dublin, so himself escaped being killed.
