  1. The waking of a corpse is different in Ireland from any other country in the world. The Irish people wake the corpse the first night, take it to the Chapel the second night, and it is buried on the third day. On the night of the wake the owner of the house distributes tobacco, snuff and sometimes drink.
    Another Irish custom is that three houses on the right and three houses on left of the wake house should remain open for the first night of the wake.
