Eggs and butter are cheap, beef and mutton not dear
And the Carberry fish jolters constantly treat us
With herrings and sprats at most times of the year
Thus you see 'tis a place for long life and good living
And he who enjoys it how happy his doom,
Very few ever leave it, the preference giving
To this beautiful spot, the sweet town of Macroom.
And now in concluding these well deserved praises
To which I have been inadvertatly drawn
For I strung them together whilst treading on daisies,
While strolling along by the winding Sullane.
Yes; I hope what I've said will eb thought quite sufficing.
For more can dispute what I boldly assume.
You may search the whole world for a place more enticing
Than this beautiful spot - the sweet town of Macroom.
A wag that flourished many years ago in a spirit of charming raillery wrote the verses on "The Sweet Town of Macroom":-
Tras-scríofa ag duine dár meitheal tras-scríbhneoirí deonacha.
