  1. Up to 50 years ago potatoes used to be set here in ridges. The farmer spread manure on the bán field. He ploughed it in ridges - 6 sods to each ridge. He hacked the ridges with a griofán to break the sod.
    The scioláns were cut at least a fortnight before sowing. Then when the ridges were hacked men and women go their "POUCHES" tied them across under one arm and over the opposite shoulder. They filled them with the scioláns, got their spades and "stuck" them. When the youngsters were able to handle a FAIRICHÍN they were made close the "holes."
    They used set the potatoes about St. Patrick's Day. When the stalks appeared above the ground they dug the furrow with a plough (furrow plough) having no board, drawn by two horses. This earth was thrown up on the ridge. The horse drew to plough when digging the furrow for
