  1. There was a man there long ago and he went to Confession. The priest put the usual questions to him at first and then he asked him if he had done anything else out of the way. "Father," says he, "I stole a hay rope." "A hay rope!" says the priest. "That is not much. What else did you do?"
    "But Father," said he, "there was a pig tied to the hay-rope."
    "You thief of a rogue," said the priest, "Why did you not tell that to me at first?"
    "By God, Father" said he, "I thought it was a great thing for me, to soften the story at first.
