    large families living in little huts and most of them had no land on which to sow crops but the better off people who had a few acres of land usually gave them about a half-an-acre of their worst land on which to sow potatoes. The farmer's wife usually gave her nearest neighbour a gallon of buttermilk or sour milk once a week if they had no cow of their own or no other means of getting milk. The huts in which the poor people lived were built of rough stones and earth and were not cemented or lime-washed as the houses now are. Many people have emigrated to America since the Famine and have done so up to a few years ago.
