The local fairs are held in Castlecomer and Carlow.
Nowadays fairs are held in towns.
In olden times buyers used to transact business in the country at crossroads and at the farmhouse.
It is not a custom still but if people happened to meet at crossroads when going to the fair they might sell.
There was a fair held in olden times in Mayo which is not held now. In Castlecomer the fair is held on the street, but in Carlow there is a fair green.
When entering the fair green a toll is paid on cattle to the gate men to the amount of sixpence a head.
It is a custom for luck money to be given when animals are sold. It is called luck money. It is nearly always calculated(continues on next page)- Informant
