  1. On the De Vesci estate there was a factory situtated about a mile from the town of Abbeyleix better known as "Leeches Factory" it gave employment to twenty girls and four men. Wool was spun and made into socks and clothing. The English Government bought Mr. Leeches' interest in the factory so as this factory would not be allowed to manufacture Irish cloth as they did with all other factories throughout Ireland. In addition to the working of this factory there was a weir which used to carry the water to this factory. This weir was turned to insure that this factory would work no more owing to the loss of its water power. That
