  1. The fox and the woodman.
    A fox chased for a long distance by a pack of hounds, came to a man who was cutting wood and asked to be shown a place in which to hide himself out of the hounds' reach. The man told the fox to hide behind a bundle of rushes that were lying near at hand.
    In a few minutes the hunters came and asked the man if he had seen the fox. "I have not", said the man at the same time pointing his thumb to the place where the animal lay hidden. The hunters did not know what he meant by the sign and soon went on quickly.
