- (continued from previous page)tried to cure an abscess, there was an excellent remedy which always gave good results. A fist of laurel leaves were put in water and boiled. Then the water was strained from the leaves and the leaves put in a cloth and tied on the abscess. The abscess was soon ripe, and when it was burst, the harmful matter was rubbed out with cotton-wool.Sore feet
To harden soft feet, which were easily bruised and made sore, lemon juice was constantly rubbed into them. The feet which received this treatment, were soon as hard as nails.Measles
If a person had measles, he was wrapped up in cotton wool, or in a hairy blanket, and was made sweat, until all the measles had disappeared. If the measles refused to appear on his skin, he was given hot milk with a spoonful of rum mixed with it. The red spots soon appeared.Boils
