    was told:
    A long time ago there was a well on Ossary shaded by a rowan tree. When the berries were ripe they would fall into the well and be eaten by the fishes. Red spots would then appear on the fish and so they received the name of "salmon of knowledge". It was not easy to catch these salmon; at the sign of danger they would go back into the cavern from which the waters flowed that supplied the well. Sometimes a salmon was caught. When the fisherman had tasted it he found himself gifted with the knowledge of all things, even as Fionn was gifted when he tasted the salmon of the Boyne.
