- In olden times the people had no clocks to tell them the time. They usually went by the sun during the day and the crow of the cock at day-break.
There is a story told of a poor man who lived in those days. He got up when he heard the cock crow thinking it was near morning and set out for the fowl market in Callan with some fowl to sell. It was a lovely moonlight night and he jogged along in his donkey and cart feeling quite happy. On his way he had to pass by a churchyard and just when passing a man walked out and halted him and said, "Why are you out his hour of the night." "Why, is it not near morning?" asked the poor man.
