  1. Local types of furniture
The Settle-table: - A seat accommodating about 4 to 6 persons. A table is attached by hinges to the back of seat, and turned down on the arms of the "settle" forms oblong table with seating room for about 6 to 8 persons. When not in use as table, top is invariable fastened to the wall, leaving the seat exposed. Found in all farmhouse kitchens.
The "Fan": - The fireplace in all the local kitchens is known as "the fan". An open fireplace about 6 feet wide (sometimes narrower) has a hearthstone in the middle.
In the hearthstone is a grating and at the left hand side of the fireplace is placed a wheel about 18 to 24 inches in diameter, with a handle on the rim. The turning of this wheel works a bellows which kindles the fire.
