  1. St. Patricks day which occurs on the 17th of March, is always observed as a holiday of obligation in this district. On that day shamrocks are worn by the people in honour of St. Patrick. Shrove Tuesday occurs on the day before Ash Wednesday. In this district pancakes are made on that day so it is called "Pancake Tuesday". Long ago the fasting imposed by the Catholic Church was so strict that no one was allowed to eat butter or drink milk during Lent so then on Shrove Tuesday, the people used to make pancakes because it was the last one they would see until Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday is observed in this district. On that day ashes is blessed
