  1. People did not begin to wear boots until they were fifteen or twenty years of age. there are no accounts of people who never got boots they always got them at some time. No children went bare-footed all the year round everyone went in summer. The water used for washing the feet was throw out. There are no beliefs about it in the district. The boots were made by a shoe-maker. There were about five shoe-makers. The people buy boots in the shops nowadays. clogs were worn and made about thirty years ago. Some people wear them now. Leather was tanned in the district. There was a tan yard in Ballybay and another one in Monaghan.
