  1. Workers half a Century ago.
    In many respects the lot of the working of man has improved considerably to what it was half a century ago. Wages were much lower, the working day was longer, and men had more hardship to endure, going to and coming from work, than the workers of the present day. In this locality where the majority of the people belong to the small farming and labouring classes, many of the men found work in the Kenmare, Muckross, and Cahernane Estate. They worked in the gardens, in the demesnes, in the parks, and fields. Some worked in the forests, cutting or carting timber and others worked in the sawmills. These men were not as well kept or as well paid as working men are now and they had to start at work about six o clock in the morning
