   Long ago in this district people were not as civilized as they are now. It is said that if a cat scrapes timber or anything link it, it is a sign of rain. If a dog eats grass it is also a sign of rain. When distant hills seem near we are sure of rain. Blue light in the fire is supposed to be a bad sign of the weather. When soot falls down the chimney rain is expected. It is also if that if flying-ants are about it is a sign of rain. Sea-birds flying inland is supposed to be a sign of a storm at sea. It is said in this district that the south west wind brings the most rain.

   Long ago cattle dealers and sellers used to transact business in country places. There were no fairs held in this parish, but fairs were held in the next parish- in the townland of Muckross. The place where the fairs were held is a green patch at the side of the road and it is still called the "Fair Green". The Killarney fairs are usually
