  1. The people who lived in Ireland long ago were very wise and were able to foretell the coming of wet and find weather. They used to look at the sky at nightfall and could tell if the next day would be fine. If white circles were seen around the moon they used to say that they would have wet weather. If they saw a lot of stars in the sky they would expect frost. People knew by the wind if rain was coming. They used to say "The north wind doth blows and we shall have snows". When the wind was from the south west they said it was a sure sign of rain. If a hollows wind blew towards evening rain was expected. If the spider was seen to creep from his web rain was expected. If the soot fell down the chimney or if the distant hills looked nigh people expected rain. If the cat turned his back to the fire r if the dog was seen to pull up the grass people said that rain was coming. If the sea birds flow inland people said that there
