  1. Local Marriage Customs
Marriages used take place in former times in Shrove only. Monday, Wednesday and Friday are thought unlucky for marriage and also May and the Autumn months, August, September, and October and also Lent and Advent.
In olden times cattle were given as dowry, but at present it is money. Long ago marriages used to take place in the houses. It is very few can remember it as it is over 100 years ago.
The customs observed on the wedding day are as follows. The Bridegroom and his party assemble in the Bride's house for breakfast, after which they sing and dance and partake of a little drink. After that they go to the chapel to get married. They return then to the bride-groom's house and partake of dinner which usually consists of roast goose.
Some boys make a dress of straw and come in disguise to the party, and are called ''strawboys''. They are entertained for some time, as they are usually very merry and create much fun in their straw dresses.
The procession to the chapel would be done on horse back about 80 years ago.
