  1. There were various kinds of houses in existence in this district in former times. Some houses were built of large sods. No stones were used except in the fire-place. A hole was made in the roof to let out the smoke. This house was roofed with sticks and long "scraws" laid over them. The house was then thatched with heather and lastly with rushes. Some of these houses were built of "daub" instead of large sods.
    Some of the better off people built stone houses and also roofed them with stones. The flags
