    were nailed to stout beams with oak pegs or large nails obtained in the local forge.
    Most of the old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was placed near the fire and was called the kitchen bed. A "pouch" or porch was let into the side wall and the bed fitted into it.
    The fire was not always placed at the gable wall. Some houses had the fire in the centre of the floor and the smoke going through a hole in the roof.
    The front of the chimney was usually made of mortar and stones. Some houses had no glass in the windows.
