  1. The local landlord was Lord de Freyne whose name was French. He resided in Frenchpark, Co - Roscommon where his ancestors were for over three hundred years. They were fairly good landlords although some tenants were "evicted" for non - payment of rent and their holdings occupied by better off people. Those evicted emigrated to the U.S.A. and Great Britain.
    The landlord's ancestors came into possession of their lands as compensation for his services under Cromwell. The family in recent times became converted from the Protestant to the Roman Catholic Church. The holdings were divided among
