    different members of a family on marriage with the consent of the landlord. The landlord was not feared but his agent was and worst of all was the bailiff whose story for or against a struggling tenant was generally believed by the landlord. A personal appeal to the landlord scarcely ever failed in a deserving case.
    Tithes were not directly paid as the landlord paid them and had them included in the rent. There was no trouble over the collection as only a few knew how they were paid.
    The de Freynes could not be described as bad landlords as in many cases where very poor people got into arrears. Many of the arrears were cancelled on payment of a respectable
