1. Forges

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   There are two forges in this parish. The names of the two smiths are Bertie Callagan and Thady Clifford. Both these people are connected with the forges for a great number of years. Bertie Callagan's forge is situated in East Commons Ardfert and Thady Clifford's is in Tubrid Ardfert. Both of the forges are near cross roads and there is a stream running in front of them. In both forges there are anvils, a fire place, bellows, sledgers, hammers and implements for shoeing horses. There are rows shoes hanging on the wall. The bellows is a large leather instrument. The smith shoes horses, asses, and mules. The smiths band wheels in the open air. It is said that smiths have the power to banish rats. Smiths as a rule are very strong men, this great strength is supposed to come from the constant swinging of the sledge. The forge is always a great place for telling stories or local gossip.
