Maguire blushed, and wept in silence,
Saying, ''noble lady, you must forbear,
For I am espoused to the Queen of Angels,
No earthly fair one will me ensnare.
The Church of Rome is my chosen consort.
And from its standards ne'er will I stray
Like Martin Luther, or Harry Ludor,
Or old John Calvin-I hate their way.''
This lady knelt down and begged his pardon,
Saying, ''I find, kind sir, I have made too free
    But if I offended, I n'er intended,
So I hope your reverence will pardon me.
I loved you dearly beyond description:
You glancing beauty did me ensnare.
Now, for your sake, I'll join a convent,
And a single lady I will remain.''
Maquire parted with this fair lady.
To the County Leitrim he was sent away,
Where he was made welcome by true Milesians,
Like our Patriarchs, on St. Patrick's Day.
