“Dear Father James a Christmas chime, ¶ Commingling prose and truthful rhyme, ¶ Recalling many a weird tale, ¶ Told round the fires of Innisfail, ¶ Of Giant's Bare and Holy Spring, ¶ Where Fairy Goblins nightly sing, ¶ Sweet dreamy songs for Leprechauns,”

To swim the chasm they dare not try,
Thus" in despair as their fate he sealed,
To the royal Bodagh they all appealed,
Saying "Oh! most noble King, how can we go
See" the flood runs high, and the storms blow[?]
He ordered a stick at their demand,
Then said "Be off with his magic wand". Oh! this wonderous stick once an apple tree,
In poor Adams orchard blooming free,
Till a healthy hand with a lovely face,
Stole an apple from its ancient place.
Tis' true, the story so often told,
How death came to the human fold.
For the seanachas tell how the stick would shiver,
If sinners dare to cross the river.
It's taught in every school and college,
That the Annaugh stick was the tree of knowledge.
Well! they vanished quick a million or more,
From Mohill, Cloone and Ballinamore,
