  1. Rush Candles.
Rush candles were used in olden times in nearly every country house in Ireland. They were made from rushes and grease of some kind, such as melted fat or lard. The rushes were gathered in Autumn and hung up in the chimney corner to season. They were then peeled, one strip of the peeling being left on so as the rush would not break. Then they were dipped in the melted grease and were ready for use. They showed poor light and it took about three of them to do one night. They were about two feet in length.
