   This very old rite has existed in many old Irish villages and country places and still is carried out in many centres with the greatest enthusiasm. The pattern day at Knockanure on the 15th August was celebrated over an area of roughly fifteen sq miles and was attended by young and old from every part of the surrounding district. Numerious sports of every decription were mainly contested by young men including pony races and doney races. There was an old man of known fame whose name will be remembered as Tom Ahern. He was well known about and some of his sayings are still to be heard which bring roars of laughter from
