    The river is running just the same
    The willows by its side
    Are larger now than they were then
    The stream appears less wide
    But the old vine tree is failing, Tom, where once we played the bow
    And swung the children full of joy -
    Some twenty year's ago.

    The spring well bubbles beneath yon hill
    Down by the spreading beach
    Tis very high twas once so low
    That I could almost reach
    In kneeling down to get a drink
    Dear Tom I started so
    To see how sadly I am changed -
    Since twenty years ago

    Upon that tree down by the well
    You know I ve cut your name
    Your comrades just beneath it Tom
    And you did mind the same
    Some heartless wretch pealed off the bark
    Tis failing sure but slow
    Just as those names you cut
